Life Doesn't Have an Undo Button: Face the Consequences

Don’t you sometimes wish that life had an undo button? It sounds amazing to be able to unravel your actions after a mistake, just like you do on your computer. Ctrl+Z is an amazing shortcut. But unfortunately, it’s unavailable in real life.

Often, we forget that all words and actions have consequences. So, we make one mistake after another. Once you become aware, it’s usually too late to make up for the things you did. It’s this moment in particular that you feel desperate to UNDO what you did. But you can’t.

So, what can you do about the things that cannot be undone? I might have a few tips to help you along the way.

Come to Terms with Your Past Actions

The truth is everyone makes mistakes.

Sometimes, we choose the wrong path or say things we don’t mean or realize can hurt others. Other times, we don’t calculate our actions properly, leading to a bad outcome. We often make mistakes because of our character or traits, such as impatience, jealousy, fear, or impulsiveness. I am not saying that’s an excuse, but it’s familiar to all of us as human beings.

The reality is there’s a broad spectrum of things that can go wrong, and sometimes it’s impossible to predict the outcome or even imagine how bad it can be.

Yet, the past is in the past. You cannot change wrong decisions, actions, words, or investments. There’s no undo button for the mistake you’ve made or the words you said, no matter how much you reminisce or overthink it.

Therefore, you can’t go to bed every night thinking about the should and would haves. It’s a waste of time. Holding on to the past will make you a prisoner of your mind. It won’t give you a chance to let go of the things you’ve done nor let you live in the present. So, it’s time to let go and move on.

The first step on this journey is to accept what you’ve done and take responsibility.

It’s not about how much you wish things would have been different but how much you are trying to change yourself and your behavior now. Your mistakes will remain yours, and they will stay in the past. However, you can choose not to carry that baggage with you anymore, begin a new, better journey, and get a fresh start.

Learn from your mistakes, but don’t let them define your present or future.

Focus on The Present

Say you are on a diet. However, one of your colleagues had a birthday in the office, and you ate a slice of cake. You already did it; it’s done. So, what’s next?

Back in the day, I was struggling with the same issue. I was either on a diet or NOT. And when I committed a minor ‘food crime,’ I would proceed to eat anything I could find. I thought: Well, I already broke the diet, so why not fulfill all my desires?

The following day, I would wake up incredibly disappointed in myself. I couldn’t stand the things I did, and in most cases, I continued the cycle of mistakes. Ultimately, I needed more than one undo button. Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Z, and still nothing!

A single mistake doesn’t have to lead to a series of bad choices. The longer you wait to break the cycle, the harder it gets.

I know, it sounds cliché. But your present is what really matters.

It enables you to fix your actions and focus on better choices. It’s a new opportunity to make good decisions, apologize, and redeem yourself if you hurt someone. And if that someone is you, try to think of the best ways to make yourself feel better and focus on the things you love and enjoy.

In the case of binge eating, you should stick to a single mistake. After the slice of cake, try to drink as much water, and continue with the diet. That’s a single example. Either way, you don’t have to fall off the wagon due to a minor setback.

Note

When you add many right things to your life, the wrong ones seem insignificant, and you’ll soon forget about them entirely.

Work to Improve Your Future

Life is quite unpredictable and doesn’t last forever. The future is important, but it won’t be pleasant unless you start changing things immediately. You’ll remain trapped in your bad decisions without an undo button to fix your wrongdoings.

Whether it’s our job, the people around us, or our self-improvement and growth, what we do in the present gives us a glimpse of what we can expect in the future.

Everything starts with yourself today. Not tomorrow, not when you have the time to do it. So, the sooner you start working for a better tomorrow, the better.

What Happens When You Use the Undo Button?

Theoretically, you can’t undo anything in life. However, there’s another side to the story. Many people will say you can end a relationship, change your job, sell the condo you thought you liked, and so on. And I agree, you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment in life.

But does that really undo your decision? Unfortunately not.

When you use the undo button on your computer, say in Word or Excel, you won’t see any signs of the move you undid. Unfortunately, in life, that’s not the case. You’ll always produce an outcome with every decision, good or bad. Even if you later evolve in life, you won’t be able to erase the mistakes. They will stick to you in your memories forever.

The next best thing you can do is to move on. Try to become more conscious of everything you do and make better decisions next time.

Conclusion

In the perfect world, we might have undo and reverse buttons to test a variety of actions and their consequences. Once you try everything, you’ll know what will produce the best outcome, making life a piece of cake.

Yet, unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way. It doesn’t offer an undo button, and always making the right decisions is impossible. So, the bottom line is you will make a mistake. However, it’s how you respond to it that counts.

There’s no point in dwelling on your past decisions. And instead of compounding a mistake with a long list of other mistakes, you can learn from it and turn it into a positive outcome. Try to focus on the present and not repeat the same mistakes, so you don’t need the famous undo button over and over again.
