Michael Krakaris Revolutionizes eCommerce Fulfillment

It’s an honor to introduce you to Michael Krakaris, an accomplished young entrepreneur, and the co-founder of Deliverr. Deliverr is a logistics and fulfillment platform for e-commerce businesses, allowing retailers to provide customers with free, two-day shipping. Recognizing and seizing an opportunity won Michael a spot on Forbes’ 30 under 30 US & Canada 2019: Retail & eCommerce list.

After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Northwestern University, Michael worked as a Business Development Intern at Twilio and a Product Marketing Manager at Symphony Commerce. His previous work experience led him to recognize the need for Deliverr on the market and ultimately led to the company’s founding.

Michael shared how his curiosity and unique way of thinking had significantly influenced his success. Join me in hearing about how he manages a team environment, what he thinks are crucial values of success, and what he does for fun. Hello Michael! First, I would like to thank you for being a part of this mission of mine! Do you mind telling us who Michael Krakaris is? Why exactly did you choose this career?

I live in San Francisco and I’m the Co-Founder of Deliverr, a platform that enables any retailer, regardless of size, to provide Amazon-like fulfillment and free, two-day shipping to its customers.

We also power Walmart’s two-day shipping.

In my current role, I oversee the product and growth teams and focus on scaling the business.

I would not say that I chose a career as an entrepreneur, more so the opportunity chose me.

While in my previous role, I noticed there was a unique issue in the logistics and fulfillment space that no one else was solving for and saw a major business opportunity in creating a solution. This led to the founding of Deliverr.

That being said, do you mind telling us more about Deliverr? How did you come up with the idea? When it comes to your business, what are you most proud of? Why?

Deliverr was founded back in 2017 with the goal of democratizing fulfillment.

At its core, Deliverr provides fast and affordable fulfillment for leading merchants on Walmart, eBay, and Shopify.

We leverage both machine learning and predictive intelligence to build a smart fulfillment network, enabling anyone, anywhere to offer fast and cost-effective fulfillment.

With Deliverr, sellers receive automatic access to Prime-like programs including eBay guaranteed delivery and Walmart free 2-day shipping.

I developed the idea back when I was at Twilio, a cloud communications company, and first recognized the value of the asset light, infrastructure as a service model.

I took those principles and applied them to the e-commerce space, which was in desperate need of reform.

With this in mind, we set out to streamline the logistics and fulfillment space by creating a service that had simple pricing, scalability and could be completely self-serviced.

When it comes to Deliverr, I am most proud of our ability to expand the market. I think that is a common trait of all truly revolutionary companies, and it’s what makes the work so rewarding.

It is very inspiring to be able to take an existing merchant, put them on an entirely new marketplace and watch their orders grow from zero to 1,000+ in a matter of months.

I would also like to congratulate you for being among Forbes’ 30 under 30! It must be a great honor. Did you see this coming? What is the one thing you believe made you who you are today?

Thank you! This definitely wasn’t something that I expected to win, although I knew it might be on the table has given Deliverr’s success and recent $7.1M funding announcement.

I was so humbled and honored to be included on this year’s Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the company of many other innovative industry leaders.

I believe that curiosity has made me who I am today.

All my life, I’ve rarely followed the rules of other people and have always laid my own track. Whether it’s solving problems in a unique way or finding an unexplored avenue to boost growth, I try to look at things in a different light and typically act independently of what others might expect.

As a co-founder, how exactly did you know this is what you meant to do in life? What can you advise anyone who is still struggling to find themselves?

Michael Krakaris

I do not think that any person has a singular purpose in life. I operate under the philosophy that our life paths are dynamic, not static, so it is important to always reevaluate and ensure that you are doing what you love.

I am a firm believer that if you love what you do, you will be great at it.

If I could offer one piece of advice to someone struggling to find themselves, it would be to try a wide variety of different things to uncover what it is you’re really passionate about.

What is the utmost importance when hiring people? What do you love about your team? Which are the best team engagement activities every company should practice?

Michael Krakaris

The most important quality in potential hires is their ability to solve complex problems. If you are able to find a candidate who can take a huge problem, break it down and find a clear solution, you have a winner. This applies to virtually every level and title, whether it is a senior engineer role or entry-level position, and it is something I try to measure in every interview I conduct.

One of the things I love most about our team at Deliverr is that we all embody the same values of curiosity, honesty, and ownership.

As I mentioned, curiosity is a huge driver of innovation and is crucial in solving complex issues that arise every day at a startup. Additionally, our team operates with total transparency so everyone can be confident that they are getting direct and honest feedback and directions.

Lastly, I am very proud of each team member’s ability to take full ownership of a project from start to finish.

In terms of the best team engagement activities, I think that team bonding opportunities like semi-weekly lunches and bi-weekly happy hours can’t be undervalued.

It is also important to celebrate big wins as a team, as well as reflect on losses. We all rightfully love to celebrate when there’s been a success, but I think a key aspect of team building and growth is to reflect on any shortcomings as a company in order to be better positioned to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your metrics? Is success always related only to work? Why?

Michael Krakaris

Our current measure of success at Deliverr is to accumulate as many merchants as possible on the platform, to have their sales grow at maximum speed and to be relatively issue-free.

According to you, which are the best qualities/skills every person who wants to be successful should have? Please explain.

Michael Krakaris

If you want to be successful in business, I think there are three qualities and skills you need.

You have to be hardworking. This may seem self-explanatory, but a strong work ethic will take you far and separate you from those who are only willing to put in the bare minimum effort.
You need the ability to problem-solver. Resourcefulness will allow you to address complex problems head-on and break them down in a way that can be easily solved.
The last skill is self-awareness. It’s critical to have a true understanding of your strengths and weaknesses to take ownership of tasks that are in your wheelhouse but ask for guidance when needed.

Who is the person you could not have made it without? What do you do for fun? Do you have a life motto?

Michael Krakaris

The one person I definitely couldn’t have made it without is my mom.

For fun, I love producing electronic music in my spare time. I’ve amassed around a quarter of a million plays on Soundcloud in the past 18 months, with the goal of hitting half a million plays by the of 2019.

I’m also a huge sports fan, and I love playing tennis and being outdoors.

I don’t think I have a true life motto, but if I had to pick one, it would be to always do what makes you happy.

What are your future plans? Where do you see yourself in the next 5–10 years? What about your business?

It’s hard to predict where Deliverr, or I, will be in the next five to-10 years.

That’s part of what is so amazing about this whole process — every day brings unique changes, and you have to be okay with the fact that you will never know exactly where you might be a year from now.

In a few sentences, can you tell us what you believe matters in life? Then, what would you advise everyone reading this interview?

Michael Krakaris

At the end of the day, it is the experiences in your life that matter the most.

Lofty goals are great and can help drive ambition, but if you have to sacrifice your experiences with your friends a family to get there, you’ll never be fully satisfied.

If I could advise one thing to everyone reading this interview, it would be to focus on the relationships with those around you.

These relationships are difficult to preserve and take a lot of work, but they are what matter the most.
