Carlos Pierre: Disrupting Real Estate with Tech-Driven Innovation

Meet Carlos Pierre, the founder and CEO of Badi, an online marketplace that connects landlords with individuals seeking secure, affordable, and convenient housing opportunities worldwide. This innovative approach to housing landed Carlos a well-deserved place on Forbes’s 30 Under 30 Europe 2019: Technology list.

Born in Barcelona, Spain, Carlos got a bachelor’s degree in Management and Business Administration at IQS Barcelona. He later completed a Master’s in Auditing and Accounting at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. His success can be attributed to his passion for finding innovative solutions to complex problems and his ability to utilize machine learning and AI, which led to the founding of Badi.

Hi Carlos, welcome to this interview! Before we start, I would like to thank you for taking the time to be a part of this mission! Can you tell us more about yourself? Who is Carlos Pierre? What was the reason for choosing the career that you have today?

Carlos Pierre

I’m Carlos, the founder of Badi, a mass-market solution for urban living solving a world-class problem of housing shortage through the leading room rental platform that enables people to list, find and book rooms that suit their needs, from anywhere in the world.

Now, do you mind telling us about Badi? How did you come up with this business idea? What is the mission of your company?

Carlos Pierre

I came up with the idea when I was starting to look for a place to rent in the city center of Barcelona.

I was surfing the internet and could only find poor quality rooms, which weren’t even affordable at the time.

I was looking for a flatshare, so I would have liked to see the profile of the people offering these rooms, but the classifieds didn’t have this option.

That’s when I had the idea: create a platform that offers affordable, good quality room rental supply and matches it with verified tenants.

I knew that this was a problem affecting people everywhere around the world, so I thought it was a good moment to start my own project and help create a solution for it.

The company’s mission is to find and unlock every single room available in the world and make city-living accessible to everyone.

I would also like to congratulate you on making the Forbes’ 30 under 30! It must be a great honor. Was this one of your goals?

Carlos Pierre

Thank you — I’m particularly delighted as I see Badi grow and more and more landlords and tenants are happy with the solution we’ve created and the service we provide and that’s not just down to me, but all the brilliant people we’ve employed along the way who are helping us realize a much bigger ambition; to find and unlock every single living unit available in the world to reply to the needs of our community and make city-living accessible for everyone.

According to you, what are the best team-building strategies? How would you describe the working atmosphere in your company in three words? Why?

Carlos Pierre

We are very collaborative as a company so the best team-building strategies for us are to foster a strong company culture to empower and encourage our employees to keep up the good work, stimulate innovation and provide a better impact as a team.

We recognize collective victories and support cross-functional collaboration and give a lot of space for people to decide how they want to tackle the challenges they face, as opposed to tell them how to do things.

To describe our working atmosphere we can use: Collaborative, Intensive, Rewarding.

We collaborate because we truly believe achieving together makes more sense than achieving alone.

It’s very intensive as you find with many startups. We are working at a very fast pace to get things done.

It’s very rewarding not only because of our achievements but also because of the experience we acquire as we achieve or even fail at something.

What would you say are the best and the worst parts of being in the technology field? How did you realize this industry is the one you are ‘supposed’ to be in?

Carlos Pierre

It’s hard not to fall into the field of technology in some way. Developing a tech platform was the only way to address what I saw as a challenge in the market that could be turned into a real opportunity.

I love that we get to use innovative technology to continue to address this need. Machine learning and AI are integral to our business because it allows us to provide a more accurate and fast solution to the growing housing needs in the big cities.

At Badi, we believe AI and UX/UI will define the PropTech industry and reshape the Housing Market worldwide. That’s an exciting place to be.

Tech players are all battling to prove that their solutions can be trusted and that’s a huge focus for us, we put user safety and security first and it has influenced how we’ve designed the platform right from the start. We’re hugely proud of that.

What is your daily routine? Which habits have changed your life and contributed most to your success?

Carlos Pierre

On a daily basis, I have and maintain a clear vision and mission and communicate it to our executive management team.

So they can sharpen their focus and lead their own teams to connect them with their short and long-term goals. I also attract and retain top talent and offer them a clear career path.

Last but not least, I partner with the best investors in the world to help us achieve our mission.

What is your opinion on smart vs. hard work? Do you think education is necessary for success? Please explain.

Carlos Pierre

I think it’s key to work smart to make fast and smart decisions.

If you work hard and do a thousand things at the same time but don’t leverage them, you’ll not progress.

If you think more and know beforehand what to analyze and measure, you’ll be able to prioritize and make the right things happen.

What is the one thing you wish you had known before you opened your own business? What are the top five qualities and traits of successful leaders?

Spend less time thinking and more time executing.

Where do you see yourself and your company in the next ten years?

Carlos Pierre

In 10 years, I see Badi as the major provider of urban living and our team solving the shortage of housing.

Last, what are your words of wisdom for someone starting in your field?

Carlos Pierre

The best piece of advice I have received and the one I would give to young everyone is – believe in your idea and learn to articulate it well.

That’s how you convince investors and therefore get the chance to surround yourselves with the best team to make your idea a reality.

It is very important to choose the best investors because they will have an important role in shaping the company and making strategic decisions.
