Louis M. Profeta: Prioritizing Health and Happiness for Success

Let me introduce you to Louis M. Profeta, a board-certified emergency physician, award-winning author, public speaker, and family man. Doctor Profeta has published writings on various topics in the healthcare and medicine world and has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other publications.

How did he get there? Dr. Profeta graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his post-graduate training at the University of Pittsburgh. He was named LinkedIn Top Voice for leadership in health care for three consecutive years. In 2018, he was honored by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists for his online media works, and he currently works as an Emergency Physician at St. Vincent Hospital of Indianapolis.

Doctor Profeta’s views on time management, success, and priorities are fresh air in today’s society! I invite everyone to see how this emergency physician balances his work with his family life.

First off, thank you for joining us! Can you tell us more about yourself? Who is Louis M. Profeta, and why did you choose this career path?

Louis M. Profeta

I’m an emergency physician from Indianapolis, Indiana. I am a married father of three boys.

I’m not going to deny it but I actually studied medicine for money.

I grew up in barely a middle-class family.

I have worked hard all my life doing every imaginable job from selling golf balls to cleaning gutters and garages to cutting lawns. Until one day when I decided I did not want to be poor anymore.

At one point in my life, I was a very accomplished athlete and had aspirations to go to the Olympics. But then, I broke my neck in an accident. During my stay in the hospital, I started feeling interested in medicine.

Then, the reality kicked in and I realized I can never again be an athlete. I thought that medicine might be the perfect fit to allow me to live a more comfortable lifestyle and do something interesting.

Needless to say, I didn’t know anything about medicine at that time. It was not until I became immersed in it. Then, I started to really appreciate what it means to be a physician.

Being a doctor, a public speaker, an author, and a family man must sometimes be overwhelming. So what is your trick for perfect time management?

The perfect trick of time management is to realize that outside of being a father and a husband none of the other stuff really matters other than to put food on the table.

All that other stuff that I do is just stuff. It is not who I am. I am a father and a husband first who also happens to be a doctor and a writer.

According to you, what is the biggest mistake people make when they define success?

If you define success by anything other than just being happy and healthy then you fail in defining success. I can show you the hundred happy poor people and as many miserable rich people.

None of us can achieve success alone. So, who is your biggest support? Additionally, what motivates you daily?

Louis M. Profeta

It is unnecessary to say my wife and my children are the biggest supporters of mine. They are what motivates me daily.

What are your ‘’5 Life Lessons I Learned From My Experience’’? Why?

Love, love some more, appreciate the beauty around you, and don’t sweat about little stuff. Because the truth is, it is just stuff.

Is there anything you would like to advise the young workaholics regarding their health and stress levels? How can we be healthier in the 21st century?

Louis M. Profeta

Keep in mind, No one died wishing they worked overtime.

As we all know, the majority of healthcare providers have trouble with the idea of monetization. So how did you manage to overcome this mental block?

Louis M. Profeta

You kind of lost me here because I certainly don’t think that most physicians I know have an issue with monetization. We all want to make a living too.

Certainly, we are benevolent but we also do not want to be hungry. I think most of the doctors in America recognize their value.

How challenging can it be to deal with people’s lives daily? How do you stay sane and focused?

When you come to the realization that it is an incredible privilege and actually amazing to be an emergency physician, it really isn’t that much of a challenge.

Dealing with people’s lives is the beauty of medicine.

It is the reason why people choose this profession.

Obviously, when you’re dealing with the tragedy you have to separate yourself from it.

You have to have a warm home in a welcoming environment to come back to after the day is done. I am blessed to have that.

Where do you see yourself and your career 5/10 years from now?

Hopefully, they will let me be a doctor in 5 to 10 years from now. I have no plans on retiring anytime soon because I really love this job.

Last, is it impossible to balance being healthy and successful? If yes, how?

Louis M. Profeta

There is no such thing as balance. If you are not healthy and happy you are not successful. You cannot have one without the other.
